Rafael GoldchainRafael Goldchain’s photographs have been exhibited across Canada, Mexico, Chile, the United States, Cuba, Germany, France, Italy, and the Czech Republic. His work is in private and public collections including France’s Biblioteque Nationale, the Canadian Museum for Contemporary Photography, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts, the Portland Art Museum, and San Diego’s Museum of Photographic Arts.. A second-generation Latin American Jewish artist, Goldchain was born in Santiago de Chile, lived in Jerusalem in the early 1970s, and moved to Canada in the late 1970s. Goldchain received a Master of Fine Arts from York University and a Bachelor of Applied Arts from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute, both in Toronto. Goldchain received the 1989 Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography from The Canada Council for the Arts, and accompanied Canada’s Governor General Adrienne Clarkson on official visits to Chile and Argentina in 2001. He is currently Professor and Program Coordinator of the Applied Photography Program at Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning in Oakville, Ontario, Canada.

Q&A:

What would be your media of choice (digital or film)?
Both. I use film for long term projects I started with film because I wish to maintain a consistant look in my prints. I use digital for my free-lance work because of greater technical control and immediate feedback.

What would you consider your first big break in the business? 
Got hired full time as medical photographer at Women's College Hospital in Toronto right after graduation from Ryerson.

What was your most challenging assignment?
Producing over 30 self-portraits in 2 months

What is your funniest photo experience?
Trying to photograph my wife and her sisters on 4x5 and not being able to stop them from giggling.

What was your 'creepiest' photo shoot? 
The Yonge Street strip in the late seventies

What is the most exotic location you've shot in?
Flying in a two seater Cessna over a war zone in El Salvador

What was your biggest photo mistake?
Confusing developer and fixer in the darkroom

Your idea of the "dream assignment"? 
2 weeks in Paris photographing everything

What three photographers do you most admire:  
Gregory Crewdson, Richard Misrach, Linda Rutemberg

Your top three photo tips:  
1. Pay attention to the light
2. Be careful in how you use the edges of the frame
3. Make photographs of what you know and love

If you could change your profession what would it be?  
A musician

Your advise to aspiring photographers:  
Make photographs all the time, learn from your photographs, make more photographs.
