Pros for Lowepro

David Dvir

David Divr"I've always loved photography. I took a bit of a roundabout way of getting to where I am now but I don't think I would change it if given the opportunity. Taking Astrophysics at the University of Toronto is a far cry from photography. Despite that I feel that I've learned a lot of valuable lessons and all the while I was working on the photography on the side. I've been shooting for eight years now and while that's not too long a career to some, I feel like I've condensed a lot of learning into that period. I'm one lucky guy to be able to be working in a field that I could only describe as a lifelong dream. Now I'm precisely where I'd like to be and my job is probably the best in the world, at least to me."

Q&A:

What would be your media of choice (digital or film)?
Digital

What would you consider your first big break in the business?
A boring industrial shoot I landed, easy quick and a surprisingly good paycheque. After that I was able to "buy" the time I needed to take everything to the next level.

What was your most challenging assignment?
See below...

What is your funniest photo experience?
I was hired to get a shot for a client. We had to stage a scene and set up appropriate lights and positioned everything properly. We only needed ONE shot to get this done. After three or four thousand shots we decided on taking a break. Looked over all the images, nothing was looking acceptable. It was an outdoor shoot, and suddenly the weather stopped agreeing with us, we lost power, no lights, and people were running for cover, everything was moved for safety. After the rain stopped, we started setting up again and before anything else was ready the model got into place. I snapped a shot, it was the keeper. Loads of equipment and all we needed was 1 camera, 1 lens, and model. Hilarity and frustration but at the same time.

Your 'assignment from hell'?
Black Sunday: an idea I had right at the start of my career to gather a bunch of portraits for my portfolio. Terrible notion. Invite a bunch of friends, and friends of friends to come in and I'd shoot them. It was horribly unorganized and lasted all day. I ended up using 1 shot for my portfolio after thousands taken. I just left no time between people and had to rush because there were so many models. Black Sunday, how I loathed you.

What is the most exotic location you've shot in?
So far, Cancun, or perhaps Aruba - depends on which you consider more exotic.

What was your biggest photo mistake?
No CF card in the camera, took photos anyway. From that day onward my camera is set to not be able to release the shutter unless there's a card in there.

Your dream assignment?
To capture the lifestyle and emotion from various cities around the world.

What three photographers do you most admire:
Chase Jarvis, Jim Richardson & Adrian Johnson

Your top three photo tips:
1. Keep it simple
2. Stay calm
3. Enjoy

If you could change your profession what would it be?
Astronaut

Your advise to aspiring photographers:
Don't give up. There's loads of technical advice or business advice to give but ultimately, the best thing to remember is never give up. This is one industry that anyone can achieve success in given enough perseverance.
